Apple Valley Waste Implements "Pay by the Bag"

Berkeley County Only – The West Virginia Public Service Commission has recently authorized a new optional residential trash subscription service called “pay by the bag”.

What does "Pay-by-the-Bag" mean?   "Pay-by-the-bag" means you pay only for the amount of trash you throw out.  It operates under the same philosophy as your current electric or gas bill. For example, higher electrical usage at your home leads to a higher electric bill. Therefore, the home owner is financially rewarded with a lower electric bill for turning off unused lights, turning down the thermostats and installing energy efficient items.

What are the benefits of this program?  Volume based programs create an awareness of solid waste issues which leads to greater emphasis on reuse, reduce and recycling. More and more communities are instituting optional pay by the bag programs to assist senior citizens, small households and recyclers. With this optional program, residents pay for the garbage they produce. Therefore, those who landfill small volumes are financially rewarded for landfilling a smaller amount of solid waste.

How can I reduce the amount of solid waste that I landfill?Berkeley County residents can lower their costs by voluntarily participating in the Berkeley County Recycling Program. More can be found by clicking here.

How much do the bags cost? One 30-gallon bag will cost $3.50 plus the current fuel surcharge rate. The current price, including the fuel surcharge, is $3.88 per bag. If you use one bag per week, it will be $6.62 per month - cheaper than the normal flat rate subscription service. The bags are available in lots of ten.

How much can the bags hold? One 30-gallon bag typically holds 35 to 50 lbs. of trash. When a bag is full, simply place it by the curb on the normal service day in your area and Apple Valley will pick up the bag.

Where do I buy the bags? At the moment, the bags can only be picked up at Apple Valley’s Office at 362 West Burr Boulevard, Kearneysville WV 25430. However, Apple Valley has a goal to initiate a free empty bag delivery program by March, 2009.

How do I get started? Contact Apple Valley Waste Services at 304-724-1834 or 877-267-1280 during business hours.
